Art Brokerage: The artist Carlo Wahlbeck was born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1933. Carlo Wahlbeck is a sculptor, painter, jewelry maker, printmaker, and four-star experimentalist in practically every artistic medium. With the overwhelming influence of past as well as contemporary masters such as Benvenuto Cellini, master of metal and form, and Swedish sculptor Carl Milles, Carlo began his formal studies at age 14 at the Stockholm School of Fine Art and secured his first studio in the basement of his home. He first visited the United States for a year in 1949, and during this time was introduced to the American Indian tribes. In 1957 he moved to North America and studied further at the Winnipeg School of Art. In 1960 another move, this time to Southern California, where he permanently makes his home. The following thirty-five years have been filled with travel - in the Southwestern United States living among the Navajos and Zunis and painting a great many surreal works that embodied their legends and outlook. He spent two years in Mexico living among the Huichole Indians in the inaccessible mountains north of Tepic, painting the Indian religion and the white man's religion as seen through Huichole eyes. Wahlbeck's long quest for individualism did not satisfy him and this ever-changing, very personal man was once more moved to a deeper self-expression clearly revealed when he began research into the cast paper medium. Between 1979 and today, he mastered his technique and came to control it.
